I've decided it is more fun for everyone to let the kids do the decorating. When they are done, I simply move some of the clumped areas to the top where they can't reach and it all works out well enough. It is a good team work activity to have the kids work together.
Carter put about every decoration he put on in one back corner between the wall and the fireplace. It was pretty funny. It didn't end up being that many. He had to keep putting the same ones on because they kept falling off. So then he would just lay them on the branches instead.
